Articulation Disorder

  • Articulation is the process refers to formation of correct speech sounds, syllables and words using articulators such as jaw, lips, tongue, teeth and palate at correct positions as required by the speech sound.
  • Inappropriate manner or placement of articulators will lead to unclear output of speech sound and sound will be unclear which affects speech intelligibility and may not be understood by the listener in one time.
  • Commonly seen Articulation errors are Substitution, Omission, Distortion and Addition.
  • There are many reasons working behind articulation problem in children such as weak muscles, less control over tongue, tongue tie, problems in respiratory system or any kind of speech immaturity. Articulation disorders can persist into adulthood or be acquired later in life due to Hearing Loss, Brain Injury, Dyslexia, Dysarthria, Intellectual Disability etc.
